In short
Unciv 4X has no accounts and no advertising, and does not sell data. Your games and settings are stored only on your device. To understand how the game is played and improve it, the app uses Google Analytics for Firebase, which you can turn off at any time in Options › Advanced › Share analytics data. If you allow it through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt, the analytics also include your device's advertising identifier. Notifications are optional.
Data stored on your device
Saved games, maps, mods, settings and a randomly generated user ID are kept in the app's storage on your device. Deleting the app deletes them.
Analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase)
While Options › Advanced › Share analytics data is on (the default), the app sends usage events to Google Analytics for Firebase, a service of Google LLC (and Google Ireland Limited in the EEA/UK), which processes them for us:
- the screens you open (main menu, city screen, tech tree, encyclopedia categories and so on) and game actions such as starting, loading, saving or finishing a game, founding a city, choosing production or a technology, adopting a policy, declaring war or making peace — only with game values such as the difficulty, map size, ruleset, turn number or the name of a building or technology; never save, player, city or map names or any text you type;
- a random app-instance identifier created by Firebase, device and app information (model, OS version, language, app version), and an approximate location (country/region) that Google derives from the IP address;
- your device's advertising identifier (IDFA), only if you choose "Allow" in the App Tracking Transparency prompt shown at the end of the introduction. It lets these analytics be linked with data from other companies' apps and websites (Apple calls this "tracking"). The app shows no ads, and ad personalization signals are turned off.
The data is used to see which parts of the game are played, where players stop and what to improve. You can refuse or withdraw tracking at any time in the iPhone or iPad Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking, and stop all analytics in Options › Advanced › Share analytics data. Google keeps event-level analytics data for the retention period set for this project (2 to 14 months). See Google's Privacy Policy and how Google uses data from apps that use its services.
Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)
While Share analytics data is on, if the app crashes it sends a crash report to Firebase Crashlytics (Google LLC): the stack trace and the app's state at the crash, device and operating-system information, the Firebase installation identifier, and a few game values to make the crash reproducible — the turn, era, ruleset, map size, the screen that was open and the language. No player, save, city or map names and nothing you type are included. Reports are used only to find and fix crashes, are not used for tracking, and are kept by Google for 90 days. Turning off Options › Advanced › Share analytics data also stops crash reporting.
Notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging)
If you allow notifications, the app registers with Apple Push Notification service and Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google LLC), which receive a push token and an app-instance identifier for your device, so that occasional announcements can be delivered. The app also schedules one local reminder on your device if the game has not been opened for 3 days; it can be turned off in Options › Advanced › Reminders, and all notifications in the iPhone or iPad Settings.
Optional online play (only if you use it)
If an optional online game is used, the app exchanges it through a server compatible with UncivServer. By default this is the free public community server https://uncivserver.xyz, which is run by the Unciv community and not by us; a different server address can be entered in Options › Multiplayer. When an online game is created, joined or played, the app sends to the selected server:
- the game state (map, nations, units, turns), which includes the random user ID created on your device and a generic player name;
- chat messages written in the game's chat;
- a password, if one is set on that server (sent as HTTP Basic authentication together with the user ID).
Other players of the same game receive the game state and chat through that server. How long the server keeps this data is decided by its operator; please see the operator's own terms. If a server address starting with http:// is entered, the connection is not encrypted.
Other optional connections
- Mods: if mods are browsed or installed, the app contacts GitHub's public API (
api.github.com) and downloads mod files from GitHub.
As with any internet request, these services can see your device's IP address, and their own privacy policies apply. No personal data from the app is included in these requests.
Children
The game is not directed at children under 13, and apart from the analytics described above it does not knowingly collect data from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
